Seen in numbers on 24 August 2007 flying in the sunlight at the top of an oak tree. Not recorded in 2008 and 2009 but neither was the sun!

Garden status: annually in variable numbers 
After just 2 records in the preceding two years, 2009 was an extraordinary year for this migratory species.  The main influx occurred on 11 May, with numbers peaking on 30 May when, during a 30 minute count, 250 were recorded flying south across the garden.  Throughout the summer good numbers were recorded with larvae found on 12 July. Seen regularly during an extended flight period from early spring to late autumn.

In August 2009 a rare form, ab. dilutus, visited the garden - see record. The exact status of this aberration is uncertain.  However, it seems likely it is a first record for Cornwall and possibly for Devon.

Two records (24 April 2007 and 28 April 2009). 

It is common in other parts of the valley.  The Devon Wildlife Trust successfully manage large areas of the Marsland reserve to conserve this species - see DWT reports.

Green Hairstreak Marsh FritillaryThere are a number of butterfly species we have seen in the valley that we are yet to record in the garden.
