Out & About

So far most of our recording has taken place in our garden in the centre of the Marsland valley.  However, it is anticipated that as we begin to target certain species, more results will feature on this page from the surrounding countryside such as Duckpool (see below).

Duckpool
Location - Duckpool is a pebble beach with sand at low tide situated 3 miles south of Marsland Mouth. It is at the mouth of another valley running east-west to the Atlantic.

The area is managed by the National Trust.

Steep cliffs are covered in diverse vegetation such as coastal heathers, birdsfoot trefoil, thrift, scabious and kidney vetch.

Target species
  • Yellow Belle 1698 (Aspitates ochrearia)
  • Square-spot Dart 2080 (Euxoa obelisca)
  • Black-banded 2253 (Polymixis xanthomista)
  • Hoary Footman 2045 (Eilema caniola)

St Mark's CE Primary School Nature Reserve
Location - Our local primary school is situated just outside the village of Shop to the south of the Marsland valley.

The school has a small area managed as a Nature Reserve and we are trapping there every week as part of the Garden Moth Scheme 2009, a national moth recording survey.

The Nature Reserve was at one time an orchard and has a number of mature trees.

Target species - this site has never been trapped before.  The school is on a high ridge overlooking the surrounding countryside and it is hoped the site will attract migrant species.

West Mill
West Mill Location - We were invited by one of our nearest neighbours to moth trap at their property, West Mill.  It lies in a spectacular setting, one mile away from us at Marsland Mouth, nestled into the valley a short distance from the sea.

We had three new records for the valley and we look forward to doing more recording and adding more species in future sessions.
